It is not immediately perceptible, but it can be deduced from the name, “La Smorfia” (the grimace): this unusual seat by Gaetano Pesce presents the face of a woman printed on its back, from which the tongue-shaped seat made in polyurethane resin protrudes.
An emblematic item in Gaetano Pesce’s creative output, La Smorfia displays a playful and emotional attitude, as well as painstaking experimentation with materials and their expressive potential, a central theme in the designer’s work that becomes the main characteristic of the project. The unexpected force of the material is then combined with typological innovation on the theme of seating. Pesce breaks down the back and the seat into four independent elements – armrests, stool and footrest – that give rise to a sort of ironic “contemporary throne.”
