Us&Them, the seat that resembles us
Us&Them is an unusual combination of function and figure: a face becomes a sofa for two. Again with this piece, Gaetano Pesce manages to trigger an effect of surprise: a sofa that no longer has the form of a sofa. Us&Them, merged into a single entity, represents a couple that unites in a single reality. The design plays ironically with the creation of a Janus Bifrons. It looks like a single face, with the nose at the center. Referencing the Cubist attitude conveyed in the paintings of Picasso, Us&Them has an anthropomorphic and physiognomic design that focuses on the extra-ordinary impact of the unreal: the proportions elude the normal laws of anatomy to exaggerate with volumes.
Gaetano Pesce investigates the relationship between anatomy and the sense of individual identity. A sofa that seats two people: mine and yours, with a single armrest, which is “ours.” The faces fit back together as in a puzzle where the parts of the two seats and the central armrest are highlighted by the chromatic contrast. The cover of the sofa is entirely removable, and the fabrics come in a range of colors. The lighting built into the back makes the object even more surreal: on the left side, the “hair” is represented by a cascade of LEDs fastened to the structure.
