Description
Inspired by the famous Italian pastry, the armchair is a radical reinterpretation on the concept of comfort and invites those who sit to playfully turn into its tasty filling.
La Sfogliata, the seat - metaphor

A sfogliata is a traditional Italian dessert where the external puff pastry is merely a container enveloping the filling. In the Sfogliata armchair, Gaetano Pesce's unexpected conceptual design subverts the order and focuses instead on the pastry, true to his classic ironic incoherence. The pastry, in the case of this radical armchair produced by Meritalia, is the superstar: a casing in double canvas or transparent material, shaped to open up and build the backrest. The sheet is supported by seven fibreglass slats which form the framework of the entire armchair and create space for the seat. Additional padding can be included to further soften the back and provide extra support, using a mattress with quilting and coloured profiles to ensure comfort.

The seat rests on seven legs, which run like ribs within the double fabric. The seat structure is rigid, yet the seat itself is made of an expanse of rubbery and flexible threads, opposing a traditional idea of comfort as a dull and predictable experience.
La Sfogliata, the seat - metaphor

Unexpectedly, the pastry metaphor is completed by those whom the armchair welcomes: for Pesce and Meritalia®, we are all precious fillings of the Sfogliata, and we deserve a seat that allows us to express our personality.
