The concept of the Morbio table – named after that town – was developed by Castiglioni precisely for his house in Switzerland. Morbio gives concrete form to Achille Castiglioni’s idea that tables should allow users to freely move their legs and knees without bumping into the support structure below the top: this was the main characteristic of the design.
The top has a “sandwich” construction that makes it light, while at the same time concealing the structure that gives the piece sturdiness and stability. For Morbio, Castiglioni utilized surfaces in fenix, a strong material that comes in a wide range of colors, as well as nobler materials like marble. Nevertheless, for the frame of the outer border he chose solid wood, in harmony with the colors selected for the top.
